BMW N47 Tuning Guide
The BMW N47 is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel used in the 120d, 320d, 520d and many X models from 2007. This guide explains its calibration context, EDC17 identification and the condition checks that matter on an older diesel.
BMW N47 Engine Overview
The N47 replaced the M47 in 2007 and became one of BMW’s most widely used diesels, fitted to the E87 and F20 1 Series, E90 and F30 3 Series, F10 5 Series and X1 and X3 models. It uses common-rail injection and a variable-geometry turbocharger, with twin-turbo versions in some higher-output applications.
Most N47 cars have now covered substantial mileage, and their emissions systems, including the diesel particulate filter and EGR, have often been serviced or repaired. Condition varies widely, so the history of each car matters more than its specification.
Engine management uses Bosch EDC17-family units, known by BMW as DDE7, with software that varies by model and year. Diesel calibrations focus on torque, so gearbox condition and the health of the fuel and boost systems strongly influence the right approach.

Choose Your N47 Tuning Path
An N47 should be judged on condition first. Injector health, boost control and the state of the emissions systems decide whether a Stage 1 file is appropriate, so the reliability and diagnostics guides are a sensible first stop.
Popular BMW N47 Models
The N47 was fitted across hatchbacks, saloons, estates and SUVs, with manual and automatic gearboxes and different emissions equipment. The model page shows what applies to a particular car.

EDC17 software differs between N47 applications and model years. Identifying the exact DDE unit and its software version determines the read method and calibration base, and confirms how the gearbox handles extra torque.
What to Check Before Tuning a BMW N47
An N47 should be free of active faults and have a known maintenance record. Boost and intake leaks, injector correction values and fuel-system condition should all be checked, as a diesel calibration depends on accurate fuelling and stable boost control.
Injector correction values are the adjustments the engine control unit makes to balance each injector, and large deviations can point to wear. The cooling system and turbocharger should also be in good order, the particulate filter and EGR must be working correctly, and the exact DDE and EDC17 identification is needed to match the software on the car.
Emissions equipment must remain fitted and working. We do not offer removal or bypass services.
