BMW N20 2.0L Turbo I4
The N20 is BMW's first mass-market four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, produced from 2011 to 2017. It powers the F30 328i/320i, F10 528i, and various X models. Available in multiple power levels and replaced by the B48.
ECU Ecosystem
Siemens MEVD17.2.x. OBD reading is well-supported across all variants, making remote file service straightforward.
Fuel Considerations
98 RON minimum. The N20 benefits noticeably from high-octane fuel. Avoid 95 RON for tuned applications.
Stage 1 Path
Stage 1 on the 328i variant delivers 270-290 hp and 380-420 Nm. The single twin-scroll turbo responds well to calibration.
Stage 2 Path
Stage 2 with downpipe and intercooler reaches 300-320 hp. The stock turbo is the limiting factor; a hybrid turbo unlocks further potential.
Reliability Considerations
Timing chain issues are the N20's primary concern — the chain guide and tensioner can fail, particularly on early production units. This MUST be inspected before tuning. Oil consumption and VANOS solenoid issues also occur.
