BMW B47 Tuning Guide
The BMW B47 is the modular 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel used in the 118d, 320d, 520d and X3 20d. This guide explains its ECU generations, emissions context and the condition checks needed before a calibration is prepared.
BMW B47 Engine Overview
The B47 arrived in 2014 as the successor to the N47, part of the same modular family as the B48 petrol and B57 diesel. It has been fitted to a wide range of models, including the F30 and G20 3 Series, the G30 5 Series and X1 and X3 variants.
Over its life the B47 has gained updated emissions hardware, including SCR in many applications and 48V mild-hybrid assistance in later models. SCR is the AdBlue-based system that reduces nitrogen oxides. These changes alter how the engine is managed, and they vary by market as well as model year.
Depending on application, engine management may use a Bosch EDC17 or MD1 unit, and the two need different read and write methods. The fitted gearbox, software version and condition of the fuel and emissions systems then decide which calibration approach is appropriate.

Choose Your B47 Tuning Path
A B47 calibration depends on the ECU generation, the emissions equipment fitted and the condition of the fuel and boost systems. Reviewing reliability and diagnostics first helps confirm the car is ready for a Stage 1 file.
Popular BMW B47 Models
The B47 is used in front- and rear-wheel-drive BMW models, with manual and automatic gearboxes and several emissions packages. Each model page sets out the details that matter for that installation.

Some B47 cars use Bosch EDC17 and others use the newer MD1 platform. Identifying which unit is fitted, and its software version, determines how the file is read and which calibration base applies.
What to Check Before Tuning a BMW B47
Before tuning a B47, confirm whether it uses an MD1 or EDC17 unit and note the current software version. The car should be up to date with servicing, with healthy injectors, a sound fuel system and no boost or intake leaks.
Cooling and boost systems need to operate normally, and the particulate filter, EGR and SCR system should all be functioning as designed. Tell us the gearbox type too, as manual and automatic versions handle increased torque differently. Any emissions-related fault entries should be repaired before a calibration is considered.
We only prepare calibrations for diesels with complete, working factory emissions systems.
