Overview
The Bosch MD1 is BMW's current-generation diesel engine management platform, internally designated DDE8 and DDE9 depending on the sub-variant. It manages fuel injection, turbocharger boost control and emission control systems across the four-cylinder B47 and six-cylinder B57 diesel engine families. The MD1 replaces the earlier EDC17 platform and introduces the TC298 processor across all known variants.
Three sub-variants are documented for BMW applications: the MD1CS001 for B47 engines, the MD1CP002 as the primary B57 variant, and the MD1CP032 as a later B57 revision associated with the DDE9 designation. As with other modern ECU platforms, the exact read and write procedures depend on the specific variant, software version and vehicle production date — identification must be confirmed before any ECU operation.
ECU Variants
| ECU Code | BMW DME/DDE | Processor | Engine Families | Example Models | Generation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MD1CS001 | DDE8 | TC298 | B47 | G20 320d, G01 X3 20d | 2018–present | Primary B47 TU diesel ECU variant. |
| MD1CP002 | DDE8 | TC298 | B57 | G20 330d, G30 530d | 2016–present | Primary B57 diesel ECU variant. |
| MD1CP032 | DDE9 | TC298 | B57 | G30 530d LCI, G05 X5 30d | 2020–present | Later B57 variant — verify against vehicle production date. |

How to Identify This ECU
- 1Locate the ECU — BMW diesel ECUs are typically mounted in the engine bay near the intake or firewall.
- 2Read the Bosch part number from the ECU label to identify the MD1 sub-variant (CS001, CP002 or CP032).
- 3Check for a DDE8 or DDE9 designation — this narrows the variant range.
- 4Query the ECU software version via OBD diagnostic tool or BMW ISTA.
- 5Cross-reference the hardware number with the vehicle VIN and production date.
OBD / Bench / Boot Compatibility
| Variant | OBD | Bench | Boot |

| MD1CP002 | Depending on vehicle, production date and software version | Depending on vehicle, production date and software version | Depending on vehicle, production date and software version |
| MD1CP032 | Depending on vehicle, production date and software version | Depending on vehicle, production date and software version | Depending on vehicle, production date and software version |
Security & Unlock Context
- MD1 variants use modern flash encryption and security access layers based on the TC298 processor.
- Read and write procedures vary by sub-variant and software version — do not assume one method works across all MD1 units.
- DDE9-designated variants (MD1CP032) may have additional security measures compared to earlier DDE8 variants.
Information Required Before Requesting a File
- ECU hardware part number from the unit label
- ECU software version (via OBD query or ISTA)
- Vehicle model, year, engine variant and VIN
- Production date of the vehicle
- DDE8 or DDE9 designation if known
- Reading method used and tool identification
