BMW B57 Tuning Guide
The BMW B57 is the modular 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel used in the 330d, 530d, X5 30d and related models. This guide covers its ECU context, emissions and gearbox considerations, and the checks to complete before a calibration.
BMW B57 Engine Overview
The B57 replaced the N57 in 2016 and shares its modular design with the B47 and B58. It is found in models such as the G20 330d, G30 530d, G05 X5 30d and X7, with higher-output twin-turbo and quad-turbo versions used in some M Performance diesel models.
Later versions added 48V mild-hybrid assistance and revised emissions hardware, so two B57 cars of similar age can differ significantly in how the powertrain is managed. Towing and long-distance use are common, and both increase the importance of condition.
Most applications use Bosch MD1 engine management, but some use EDC17-family units, so identification is always necessary. The ZF 8HP gearbox, injector and turbocharger condition and the health of the emissions systems all shape how a calibration is prepared.

Choose Your B57 Tuning Path
The right B57 path reflects how the car is used as well as how it is specified. Towing, mileage, emissions-system health and the software version all influence whether Stage 1 suits the car or more checks come first.
Popular BMW B57 Models
The B57 spans saloons, estates and large SUVs, including multi-turbo versions in some models. Gearbox calibration, cooling capacity and emissions equipment vary between them, so start from the exact model.

Confirming the engine control unit, whether MD1 or EDC17, and its software version is essential before reading a B57. The ZF automatic also needs to be considered, as it governs how extra torque reaches the wheels.
What to Check Before Tuning a BMW B57
A B57 should have a clear service record and no active faults before calibration. Injector health and the fuel system need checking, together with boost pipework, intercooling and the cooling system, especially on cars that tow or cover long motorway distances.
The particulate filter, EGR and SCR system should be working as designed, and the MD1 or EDC17 unit must be identified along with its software version. The gearbox setup and any 48V system are also noted, so the calibration matches the full powertrain. Multi-turbo versions need each boost stage assessed.
Calibrations are prepared only for vehicles with their factory emissions systems fitted and operating.
