BMW S58 Tuning Guide
The BMW S58 is the current twin-turbo 3.0-litre M inline-six, used in the G80 M3, G82 M4, X3 M and X4 M. Learn how its MG1 DME, gearbox, fuel and cooling shape a calibration, and what to check before requesting one.

BMW S58 Engine Overview
The S58 entered production in 2019 in the F97 X3 M and F98 X4 M, followed by the G80 M3, G82 M4 and later the G87 M2. It is related in concept to the B58 but built for M use, with a closed-deck block, forged crankshaft, two mono-scroll turbochargers and a 3D-printed cylinder-head core.
Different models and Competition versions run different software and output levels, and the X3 M and X4 M package the engine differently from the M3 and M4. Those variations affect cooling behaviour, intake temperatures and how torque is managed through the drivetrain.
S58 applications use Bosch MG1 engine management, which requires a specific read and write approach. Gearbox choice, fuel quality and supporting hardware then determine what is appropriate, and datalogs are particularly useful for confirming how an individual car behaves.

Choose Your S58 Tuning Path
The S58 responds closely to fuel quality, temperatures and gearbox setup, so the path depends on more than the engine code. A healthy standard car usually begins at Stage 1, while modified cars need their hardware reviewed first.
Popular BMW S58 Models
S58 cars include high-performance saloons, coupés and SUVs, with xDrive, rear-wheel-drive, automatic and manual versions. Each combination brings its own software and drivetrain considerations, so start from the exact model.

MG1 identification is essential on an S58, as the DME version determines how the file is read and which calibration base applies. The ZF automatic or six-speed manual also affects how increased torque is handled.
What to Check Before Tuning a BMW S58
S58 calibrations depend heavily on fuel quality, so the file should be written around the octane you can reliably buy. Ignition parts should be in good condition, and the cooling and charge-air systems should keep temperatures stable during repeated pulls or track sessions.
Fault memory should be clear, and datalogs from the car in its current state are valuable before any changes are made. Let us know the gearbox type and any intake, intercooler, downpipe or exhaust upgrades, as these affect how the calibration is prepared and whether further review is needed.
