Bosch MG1 / BMW DME8

The Bosch MG1 is a modern gasoline ECU platform used across BMW B48, B58, S58 and selected later N63 applications. The exact MG1 variant fitted depends on the vehicle's hardware and software.

Overview

The Bosch MG1 is BMW's current-generation petrol engine management platform, internally designated DME8. The six-cylinder B58 engine launched with the BMW DME 8.6 engine computer from this family, and the platform is also used on the four-cylinder B48, the S58 M-division engine and selected later N63 V8 configurations. Which MG1 variant a given car carries depends on its hardware and software, so it must be read from the DME rather than assumed from the model. Multiple sub-variants exist — MG1CS003, MG1CS024, MG1CS049 and MG1CS201 — each differing in processor, calibration structure and supported feature set.

Because sub-variants share the MG1 family name but differ at the hardware level, correct identification is essential before any read, write or calibration activity. The earliest MG1CS003 units use an SPC5777M processor, while all later variants moved to the TC298. Read methods, security access procedures and tool compatibility can vary between these processor types, even when the ECU family designation appears identical on the surface.

How to Identify This ECU

  1. 1Locate the ECU label on the unit — typically visible on the upper or side surface of the DME housing.
  2. 2Read the Bosch part number to identify the MG1 sub-variant (CS003, CS024, CS049 or CS201).
  3. 3Query the ECU software version via OBD diagnostic tool or BMW ISTA.
  4. 4Cross-reference the hardware number with the vehicle VIN and production date.
  5. 5Confirm the exact processor type if read method selection depends on it.

Security & Unlock Context

  • MG1 variants use flash encryption and security access layers that differ between sub-variants.
  • Read and write procedures depend on the exact ECU variant, processor and software version — do not assume one method works across all MG1 units.
  • Some variants may require specific tool firmware or protocol versions for access.

Information Required Before Requesting a File
