BMW B48 2.0L Turbo I4

The B48 is BMW's modular 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. It replaced the N20 from 2014 onwards and powers the 20i/30i range across the 1 Series through 5 Series and X models. Available in multiple power tunes from 135 kW to 190 kW from the factory.

ECU Ecosystem

Bosch MG1CS003 on most variants. The lower-powered B48B20O0 uses MEVD17.2.x on some earlier models. OBD reading available on many variants; newer models may require bench access.

Fuel Considerations

98 RON minimum for Stage 1. The B48 is sensitive to fuel quality — always verify knock sensor readings via datalogging after calibration.

Stage 1 Path

Stage 1 on the 30i variant (B48B20O1) typically delivers 280-300 hp and 420-440 Nm on 98 RON. The 20i variants see proportionally strong gains from their lower base.

Stage 2 Path

Stage 2 requires a performance downpipe and upgraded intercooler. Gains reach 310-330 hp depending on supporting hardware. The stock turbo becomes the limiting factor above this level.

Reliability Considerations

Generally reliable. Common attention points include the timing chain (inspect at higher mileages), thermostat housing (plastic, prone to cracking), and PCV valve. The 30i variant handles Stage 1 loads well on standard hardware.
