BMW B58 3.0L Turbo I6

The B58 is BMW's modular straight-six turbo petrol engine, introduced in 2015 as the successor to the N55. It powers the M340i, M240i, X3 M40i and Toyota Supra among others. Known for exceptional build quality, a closed-deck block, and strong tuning headroom that responds remarkably well to Stage 1 calibration.

ECU Ecosystem

Bosch MG1CS003 / MG1CS201 depending on model year. OBD reading is supported on pre-2019 variants; later models may require bench or boot access via the DME connector.

Fuel Considerations

Minimum 98 RON recommended for Stage 1. E85 blends unlock significant additional headroom but require injector upgrades for sustained use. Always datalog knock counts after calibration.

Stage 1 Path

Stage 1 calibration typically yields 380-420 hp and 540-580 Nm on 98+ RON fuel with no hardware changes. The factory intercooler and fuelling system handle Stage 1 loads comfortably.

Stage 2 Path

Stage 2 requires a performance downpipe, upgraded intercooler, and ideally a charge pipe upgrade. Expect 430-470 hp and 600+ Nm with appropriate fuelling and datalogging validation.

Reliability Considerations

The B58 is exceptionally robust. Weak points at higher power levels include the factory charge pipe (prone to popping under boost) and the stock intercooler which heat-soaks on track. The ZF8 transmission handles Stage 1 torque well but benefits from a TCU remap.
