BMW N47 2.0L Turbo Diesel I4
The N47 is BMW's 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel produced from 2007 to 2014. It powers the E90/F30 320d, 120d, X1 18d/20d and many others. Well-known for its timing chain issue but otherwise a capable and tuneable engine.
ECU Ecosystem
Bosch EDC17 C06/C41/CP02. OBD reading is well-supported. The EDC17 platform is thoroughly documented for calibration.
Fuel Considerations
Standard diesel fuel. The N47 is not particularly fuel-sensitive but benefits from premium diesel, particularly in cold weather operation.
Stage 1 Path
Stage 1 on the 184 hp variant delivers 220-240 hp and 420-450 Nm. Strong real-world improvement in acceleration and overtaking confidence.
Stage 2 Path
Limited Stage 2 potential due to turbo size. Focus on exhaust optimisation and EGR strategy refinement within legal limits.
Reliability Considerations
CRITICAL: The N47 timing chain is at the REAR of the engine and is known to stretch and fail, potentially causing catastrophic engine damage. This MUST be inspected (and ideally replaced if not already done) before any tuning work. Listen for chain rattle on cold start. Other concerns include swirl flap failure and EGR fouling.
