BMW N57 3.0L Turbo Diesel I6
The N57 is BMW's 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine, produced from 2008. It powers the 530d, 330d (F30), X5 30d/40d and many other models. Known for exceptional torque delivery, refined operation and strong tuning headroom.
ECU Ecosystem
Bosch EDC17 CP45/CP49 depending on variant and model year. OBD reading is supported on most variants. The tri-turbo N57S may require bench access.
Fuel Considerations
Standard diesel fuel. Premium diesel with higher cetane rating can improve combustion quality. The N57 is less fuel-sensitive than petrol counterparts but benefits from quality fuel.
Stage 1 Path
Stage 1 on the single-turbo N57D30O0 (530d/330d) typically yields 300-320 hp and 620-660 Nm. The twin-turbo 40d variants reach 350+ hp at Stage 1.
Stage 2 Path
Stage 2 gains are more modest on diesel — primarily addressing the exhaust restriction. A decat downpipe (where legal) and upgraded intercooler allow the calibration to push closer to turbo limits.
Reliability Considerations
Very robust engine. Swirl flaps should be inspected and potentially removed or replaced with blanks. Injector coding drift is common at higher mileages. The timing chain is on the rear of the engine and expensive to replace — inspect before high-power tuning.
