BMW S55 3.0L Twin-Turbo I6
The S55 is BMW M's twin-turbocharged straight-six, powering the F80 M3, F82 M4 and F87 M2 Competition. Based on the N55 architecture but with a forged crank, twin mono-scroll turbochargers and significantly higher factory output. One of the most popular M engines for tuning.
ECU Ecosystem
Siemens MSD81 variant / Bosch MEVD17.2.G on later models. OBD access is available on most variants. The DME is well-documented for remote calibration.
Fuel Considerations
98+ RON essential. E85 blends are popular for competition builds but require LPFP upgrade and injector assessment. Knock monitoring is critical.
Stage 1 Path
Stage 1 reaches 500-530 hp and 650-700 Nm with no hardware changes on 98+ RON. The twin turbo setup responds aggressively to boost and timing calibration.
Stage 2 Path
Stage 2 with downpipes and upgraded intercooler pushes 550-600 hp. Further gains require turbo upgrades (pure turbine housings or hybrid turbos), upgraded fuel pump and E85 compatibility.
Reliability Considerations
Crank hub is a known weak point — crank hub fix/pinning is recommended before aggressive Stage 2+ tuning. Rod bearings should be inspected at 80-100k km. Charge pipes are prone to popping under increased boost.
