BMW S68 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 Hybrid
The S68 is BMW M's latest twin-turbo V8, debuting in 2023. Based on the N63 architecture but extensively redesigned for M duty with cross-plane crankshaft, revised turbochargers and integrated 48V mild-hybrid system. Powers the G05 X5 M LCI, G09 XM and G90 M5. Combined system output reaches up to 748 hp in the XM Label Red.
ECU Ecosystem
Bosch MG1 family with latest-generation encryption and hybrid integration ECU. The 48V mild-hybrid system adds a secondary control module. Tuning access methods are still being documented for this platform.
Fuel Considerations
98+ RON essential. The high-compression V8 with forced induction is sensitive to fuel quality. Premium fuel is mandatory for any tuning work.
Stage 1 Path
Stage 1 calibration potential is still being evaluated as tooling matures. The base S68 produces 585 hp; early calibration work suggests 650+ hp is achievable with software alone. The hybrid integration adds complexity to the calibration process.
Stage 2 Path
Stage 2 paths are in early development. The platform's hybrid integration means both the combustion engine and electric motor calibrations must be considered together.
Reliability Considerations
Too new for long-term reliability data. The S68 shares fundamental architecture with the proven N63TU3 but adds significant hybrid complexity. We recommend conservative calibrations until the platform matures and failure modes are better understood.
