Boost Control on Petrol Platforms
Modern BMW petrol turbos use electronically controlled wastegates that allow precise boost targeting across the entire rev range. A well-calibrated Stage 1 file raises the target boost curve while maintaining the factory safety margins for compressor surge and over-speed. The result is a broader, flatter torque plateau rather than a single peak.
Fuelling and Injector Headroom
Direct-injection petrol engines have finite injector duty cycles, and the calibration must respect those limits to avoid lean-running under high load. Higher-octane fuel (98 RON / 93 AKI minimum) gives the ECU additional headroom to advance timing and sustain higher boost. We always confirm injector headroom before finalising a file.
Cooling and Heat Management
Increased power means increased heat rejection. On intercooled platforms like the B58, charge-air temperature is the primary limiter of sustained performance. Upgrading to a larger intercooler can reduce intake temps by 10-15 °C under load, which the ECU translates directly into more aggressive timing and higher consistent output.
Recommended Preparation
Before submitting a petrol calibration request, verify spark plug condition and gap, check for boost leaks, and confirm you are running the recommended fuel grade. A short wide-open-throttle datalog on the stock calibration is invaluable — it lets our engineers see the baseline airflow and knock behaviour before writing the file.
