BMW B47 2.0L Turbo Diesel I4
The B47 is BMW's modular 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, replacing the N47 from 2014. It powers the 18d, 20d and 25d range across 1/2/3/4/5/X Series. Significant improvements over the N47 including a chain-driven timing system at the front of the engine.
ECU Ecosystem
Bosch EDC17 C50/C56 or MD1 on newer variants. OBD reading supported on most models; newer B47 TU variants may require bench access.
Fuel Considerations
Standard diesel. Premium diesel recommended for consistent knock-free operation. The B47 injection system is precise and benefits from clean, quality fuel.
Stage 1 Path
Stage 1 on the 20d (190 hp base) delivers 230-250 hp and 440-470 Nm. Excellent torque curve transformation with noticeably improved mid-range pull.
Stage 2 Path
Stage 2 is limited by the single turbo capacity. Focus is on optimising within the turbo envelope with exhaust improvements where legally permissible.
Reliability Considerations
Significantly improved over N47. The timing chain is at the front of the engine (accessible without engine removal). EGR valve fouling remains a concern on high-mileage cars. Injector drift should be checked before tuning.
