BMW N47 Timing Chain

Understanding the N47 timing chain issue and why it must be addressed before tuning.

The BMW N47 2.0-litre diesel engine has a well-documented timing chain issue that affects vehicles produced between 2007 and 2014. Unlike most modern engines that position the timing chain at the front, the N47 places it at the rear — between the engine and the transmission.

This rear-mounted chain stretches over time, causing the chain tensioner to reach its limit. Symptoms include a rattling noise on cold start (particularly noticeable from the rear of the engine), rough idle that smooths out once warm, and in severe cases, engine warning lights.

Critical: if the chain stretches beyond the tensioner's travel, it can skip timing, causing the pistons to contact the valves and catastrophic engine failure. This is not a gradual failure — it can happen suddenly.

Before any tuning work on an N47, the timing chain condition MUST be assessed. If there is any doubt, replace the chain, guides and tensioner before proceeding with calibration.
